Deuteronomy 4:23-24

“For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. “So watch yourselves, that you do not forget the covenant of the LORD your God which He made with you, and make for yourselves a graven image in the form of anything against which the LORD your God has commanded you.

During the TVC Prayer week January 2019, the thought of God being jealous over us became a highlight as different people were giving their near death experiences in 2018 as they wrestled with God. Reflecting on their stories, it felt God was hewing them out from a deep place of limitation and bringing them into a correct positioning with him.

Psalm 78:58

For they provoked Him with their high places And aroused His jealousy with their graven images.

One of them shared how her journey into TVC was characterized by many crises and even as it was clear that she was to come to TVC, her confirmation was that she would come to a place where she could serve God through WORSHIP. Indeed God brought her in but she perfected many areas of her life except serving in the worship! She had grown in her role as a wife, a mother and a business woman even though the main reason why God brought her to TVC was still untouched.

And God being merciful and gracious led her through a process of find her place. But it was not until the TVC Family Sunday on 16th Dec 2019 that God picked her up from the crowd and declared, “I have use for this voice!” And that is how what looked like a crisis that was leading her to death ended.

What does this show? That God will go to any height, to any depth and to any breadth reaching after us. He is jealous when he sees us perfecting other areas of our lives and abandoning the main real reason why He created us. It is either He has us doing his will or he will kill us.

Deuteronomy 6:15

For the LORD your God in the midst of you is a jealous God; otherwise the anger of the LORD your God will be kindled against you, and He will wipe you off the face of the earth.

The other person had earlier been involved in TVC structures. In the season that followed, she only had her family as her main point of service. Beyond that, she remained dormant and not engaged in TVC in a major way. And it was like God was not happy with that.

2 Corinthians 11:2

For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy; for I betrothed you to one husband, so that to Christ I might present you as a pure virgin.

So on this occasion, God arranged an encounter that would awaken her from the slumber. She found herself unwell and almost losing her life. And in this moment of frailty, she was able to negotiate for her life, reminding God that she had yet so much to accomplish going by the prophetic word in her life.

And that is how she got her life back. On the promise to accomplish God’s purpose her life was restored. Truly God is jealous over us. It is He either gets it all or He takes us home to rest.

Deuteronomy 32:16

“They made Him jealous with strange gods; with abominations they provoked Him to anger.

The last one was fully engaged in ministry and was serving deeply, but as she would publicly confess, there were areas in her life that she could not have faith in God. She was able to trust God for finances but failed to do so in other areas. And God initiated a process of revealing to her that He was trustworthy.

She developed some illness that caused her heart to race irregularly and she lived in fear of collapse or sudden death. But God used a situation where she had no option but to believe she could trust God to heal her and when she raised her faith, God healed her at that moment and the condition ceased.

But God was not done. He initiated another situation where He rescued her from a thug in a situation when a car she was driving broke down. Even though she had unwittingly invited the thug into the car to escort her, God sent an angel who safeguarded her and shielded her from grave danger. It was at this juncture she realized that God is in control of her life and she learnt truly there is no way she can say she is serving God when she cannot fully trust Him.

And this story demonstrates once again that truly God is jealous over us. He wants us to fully trust him and to learn how to lean on Him in all situations. He delights in us when we allow Him to take all the glory.

Exodus 34:14

“…for you shall not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God…”
